Artificial Intelligence collaboration (2022)

Oil on paper, mounted on wood panel. 2022. 8x8in.

Using the early version of an image-rendering tool, I asked Artificial Intelligence to produce photos of shelter dogs. The resulting images revealed that the computer couldn’t distinguish where the cage ended, and where the dog began. The dogs appear to melt and merge with their kennel.

These results spoke volume about the life of shelter dogs, who spend so much time (sometimes years) in their cage, it is no wonder AI couldn’t separate the two. I turned these portraits into oil paintings, to materialize and instill permanence into these images.

These AI tools rapidly evolved, and a few weeks later the same prompt got very different, much more realistic results.

The original paintings and print reproductions are available via my shop.
